Edinburgh

ESFF-2022---FINAL_POSTER_A3-Low for socialThe Bigas Luna Tribute Edinburgh was a collaboration with the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival on October 14-15th, featuring screenings of the ‘Iberian Portraits’ Trilogy with intros and Q&A sessions.

Starting on Friday October 14th at 6pm, the screening of Jamón jamón (1992, with English subtitles) originally planned for Filmhouse, it had to be re-scheduled at short noticed to the Institut Français d’Écosse* due to the sudden and devastating closure of Filmhouse quite literally overnight in early October. The new venue, in the heart of Edinburgh, was a success, and the screening sold-out. Santiago Fouz Hernández (Professor of Iberian Studies and Film Studies at Durham University) introduced the film and was joined at the end by Nuria Campdevilla (Professor of Gender Studies and Hispanic Studies at Exeter University) for an animated Q&A with many engaging questions from the audience.

On Saturday October 15th Summerhall hosted a double bill starting with Huevos de oro/Golden Balls (1993, with English subtitles) at 4pm with an intro by Dr Fiona Noble (Lecturer in Spanish Cinema at the University of Stirling and author of Subversive Spanish Cinema) and followed by La teta y la luna/The Tit and the Moon (1994, with English subtitles) at 6.30pm with an intro by Prof Fouz Hernández. Noble and Fouz also did long Q&A for both films, attracting many questions and comments from very engaged audiences, lasting for over 40 mins.

The events provide an opportunity to enjoy the important work of one of Spain’s most iconic filmmakers and to learn more about the context in which they were produced, in conversation with some of his collaborators and international academics that have researched the films.

in 2022 we celebrated 30 years since the release of Jamón Jamón, the film that launched the careers of Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. Both actors were also Academy Awards nominees that year.
