The two Bigas Luna Tribute events planned for 2020 in New York City and Madrid are currently postponed until further notice due to Covid-19. We are looking forward to resuming our programme of screenings, exhibitions and Q&A sessions as soon as it is safe to do so. Meanwhile, we are delighted to participate in the following virtual events.
Unless otherwise indicated, virtual events are live. Recordings of some events also available (as indicated below). Please note that the film analysis workshop will not be made available as a recording to non-registered users.

Film analysis workshop

The first interactive virtual Bigas Luna Tribute event will took place on Thursday 26 November 2020 4-5pm UK time. The free event was sponsored by Durham University and hosted by filmmaker Santiago Garrido Rua and Durham academic Santiago Fouz Hernández.
The event webpage is available for consultation here www.bigaslunaworkshop.eventbrite.co.uk
Those who registered for the event can also still access the additional materials published there for registered attendees only, including a 7-min clip of Bigas Luna’s film YO SOY LA JUANI (2006), the relevant extract of the film script in its original Spanish and in English (kindly translated into English by Durham Univeristy students) and other additional materials, such as the original film trailer and a video spinoff.
The session was split into three parts. In PART 1 filmmaker and Bigas Luna collaborator discussed the sequence from his perspective as filmmaker and Second Unit director of this film. In PART 2 Prof Santiago Fouz Hernández analysed the clip from a Film Studies perspective. This included technical skills, socio-historical contexts and relevant aspects of Bigas Luna’s aesthetic and style in order to enhance the understanding of the clip and film. Finally, in PART 3 those who registered for and attended the event were split into ‘breakout rooms’ to discuss the clip further. We ended with a plenary, where the small groups were able to share their findings and ask questions to the instructors. You can watch a very short 6-min summary of the 90-min workshop below.
Summer 2020
Podcast
A new Podcast episode every Tuesday and Friday throughout August and September 2020. These short episodes are based on the virtual book launch of the book El legado cinematográfico de Bigas Luna (Tirant lo Blanch, 2020) and include short presentations by the authors and some sounds from the films, as well as brief introductions and conclusions for each episode.
This podcast is a warmup for a much more ambitious podcast project that we plan to launch in 2021 and that will include interviews with members of the Spanish film industry, film programmers and Bigas Luna collaborators as well as academics, students researchers interested in the work of Bigas Luna.
The podcast is available in most Podcast platforms, including Spotify and Apple (just search for ‘Bigas Luna’).

A recording of the 90-min event originally broadcast live on YouTube on June 4th 2020. The event was a presentation of the new book El legado cinematográfico de Bigas Luna (Tirant lo Blanch, 2020) and it was moderated by Dr Esther Gimeno Ugalde (University of Vienna). It consisted of a conversation about each and every feature film of Bigas Luna, from Tatuaje (1976) to BigasxBigas (2016) with the book editor, Santiago Fouz Hernández (Durham University), and 10 of the contributors: Ralf Junkerjürgen (U. Regensburg), Antonio Lázaro Reboll (U. Kent), Abigail Loxham (U. Liverpool), Alfredo Martínez Expósito (U. Melbourne), Alejandro Melero (U. Carlos III Madrid), Gonzalo M Pavés (U. La Laguna), Jorge Pérez (U. Texas at Austin), Carolina Sanabria (U. Costa Rica) and H Rosi Song (U. Durham). The conversation, focused on the film legacy of Bigas Luna, covered key issues to understand his work, such as film genre, acting and performance, national identity, gender and sexuality or recurring imagery, narrative strategies, or aesthetic concerns. Click here for a preview of the first few pages of the book, available as Ebook and paperback.
This book launch is also available by chapters as video episodes on Instagram TV and as an audio podcast.
